Description
'Classic . . . the definitive account of aerial combat - full of passion and poetry' - Max Arthur, Independent 'Magical evocation of the lonely battle fought in the clouds' - The Daily Telegraph 'This is a book everyone should read. It is the autobiography of an ace, and no common ace either. The boy had all the noble tastes and qualities, love of beauty, soaring imagination, a brilliant endowment of good looks . . . this prince of pilots . . . had a charmed life in every sense of the word' - George Bernard Shaw
Sent to France with the Royal Flying Corps at just seventeen, and later a member of the famous 56 Squadron, Cecil Lewis was an illustrious and passionate fighter pilot of the First World War, described by Bernard Shaw in 1935 as 'a thinker, a master of words, and a bit of a poet'. In this vivid and spirited account the author evocatively sets his love of the skies and flying against his bitter experience of the horrors of war, as we follow his progress from France and the battlefields of the Somme, to his pioneering defense of London against deadly night time raids.Reviews

Summary: "A Great Chronicle of the Great War"
It is remarkable that Lewis survived to record the events he witnessed and participated in nearly a century ago. I feel fortunate that he did so.This book provides a vivid and insightful glimpse into military aviation's earliest days. The flight sequences are rendered very effectively and will strike a note of realism with many more recent pilots.
Lewis wrote the book before turning forty. He lived an active life for fifty more years, and published a book of poetry shortly before his death in the mid 1990s. He was said to be the last surviving fighter ace of WWl
I have read the book several times over the course of many years and continue to find it very enjoyable.

Summary: "Sagittarius Rising"
I am a WW1 aviation "fanatic". I have read every WW1 pilot biography I can find and I think this one, Sagittarius Rising is excellent. The author tells his story and "puts you there". I have read Rickenbacker's Fighting the Flying Circus and its a dry, boring daily patrol report that really doesnt tell you what its all about. The book by Chaz Bowyer telling the story of Albert Ball vc is another EXCELLENT book and although it does have a lot of Ball's personal thoughts, its not written by him. The BEST book Ive read about WW1 aviation is Echoes Of Eagles by Charles Woolley. Mr Woolley writes about his fathers experience and its the best book on the subject that I've ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone thats interested in WW1 aviation. Ray Selvig, Sedro-Woolley, WA.

Summary: "Readers of "Writing" will like it too."
Mostly, Sagittarius Rising is a "War" book of interest to aviation and history buffs. But, the writing is so interesting and imaginative, readers without deep passion for planes or period are likely to start...and not stop until the last page.
Lewis writes with a rare gift for pictures and even structure. Readers of pleasure will appreciate the work like it were a good meal. Historians, however, may find Sagittarius a little light on details, but the book's credibility and authority seems solid.
If you're reading this review, you obviously have an interest in the arena - Sagittarius Rising is an excellent seat.

Summary: "Excellent"
This account of WWI aviation is a unique version not found in other books from this time period. It gives an inside look into the thoughts and feelings of a combat aviator during the infant days of aerial combat. A must have for any WWI aviation buff. I truely enjoy reading this book.
